These are my laundry machines at home. The washer I bought new from Sears in 2000 and I got the dryer at a second hand store. It looks to be 60′s or maybe early 70′s. I was having a problem with sand from the water well getting into the plumbing so the input screen got clogged up with sand and I need to fill the machine manually with a hose. I now have city water so I can finally clean the screen without worry of more sediment getting into it. I wash with cold water only and it seems to work just fine.

I hear that GE Maytag Whirlpool took over most of the US major appliance makers. It used to be a who owns what, but now it looks like a monopoly, like ebay and Windows.

The screen full of sand or whatever, it shouldn’t be too hard to clean out I think,
I’m not exactly sure what the screen is,
but I would suppose a good blast at it with
that kinda water pressure would clear it up.

Great machines. That dryer is definitely 1960′s and will last forever, doesn’t differ too much mechanically from a new Whirlpool/Kenmore dryer so parts are still very common. I’ve always liked Kenmore washers (well, until they switched to that ugly back-opening lid and lost their distinctive look), extremely reliable. Hopefully you’ll also find a nice belt-drive Kenmore or center-dial Maytag to use as well, to complete the retro laundry pair!

I just saw a center-dial Maytag at an estate sale plus there are vintage machines at a local thrift store. I might just go ahead and get one and use the 2000 Kenmore as a back-up.
Have you ever fixed the valve/screen problem where it got plugged up with sediment? I actually have not done any laundry machine repair before.

I usually remove the screens in the water valve and replace the standard washers in the inlet hoses with the screen washers. I’ve found them in either the plumbing or lawn & garden section at the hardware store. I also prefer the braided SS inlet hoses over the others. The ’03 Maytag up at the house has the original black rubber hoses that are 5 years old. I’ll be replacing them with SS hoses after I get back from a trip next week and see if there is any sediment buildup on the screens, too.

we just replaced our washer & dryer a few months ago. Went with kenmore yet again. The washer is so quiet, we can barley hear it run.
I like our city water much better than well. The pressure is much more even than at my Grandmas.

Kenmore is the best you can get. My mom has a washer and dryer from them that still work and they are almost 40 years old. They were in that wonderful turquoise color so popular in the 1960′s. BTW, Does kitty cat help with the laundry? LOL

my brand new whirlpool washer(2009) has stopped doing neutral drain. the clutch now engages when its supposed to do neutral drain.
